Month of Peace in Providence
September 2011

Observing the Month of Peace in Providence is an expansion of our celebrations of the United Nations International Day of Peace events for the last seven years. The Month is being organized by Ginny Fox of the Peace Flag Project (PFP). Her PFP has been the primary organizer of the UN Peace Days in Providence.
Celebrating the Peace Month is about helping to create the Beloved Community in our wonderful city. The Beloved Community is one of equality and justice. A peaceful culture is one that we can create ourselves by how we live our lives each day. The goal is peaceful relationships on all levels. Our focus is on how we live with our families, friends, and community members; what kind of citizens, coworkers and colleagues we are; and, how we educate our children and work for social justice. It’s about being able to live a healthy life with meaningful work, good housing and safe neighborhoods. It’s about affirming our need for artistic expression and appreciation for culture in all its diversity. It’s about how we live on this planet and use its resources. It’s about appreciating the connection of all life physically and spiritually.
Events during September will be special peace events or events occurring during September that are reflective of a peaceful world. A tentative schedule of events is blow. Please check our website and organizational websites for further details. We are also happy to be part of Providence’s 375 th Anniversary!

All events are free and open to the public.

Peace Walk at WaterFire – Saturday, September 24

Gather at Wall of Hope at WaterPlace Park Basin
Gathering from 6:30 to 7:30 pm
Walk begins 7:30
Our major event of the year is less than a week away, and we hope many people (kids, too) will come walk together in peace. We want all the communities of RI to be part of this celebration of the UN International Day of Peace.

6:30 to 7:30 pm Gathering
* Information and Instructions for the Walk will be given.
* We encourage as many people as possible to donate $5.00 to WaterFire to carry a Luminaria. Carrying a candle Luminaria will add to the beauty of the Peace Walk, and it helps to support WaterFire. WaterFire brings enormous benefit to our city and state, we’d like to help them as much as possible.
* You can reserve a Luminaria in advance on the WaterFire.org website by using PayPal or a credit card. Link is http://waterfire.org/saturday-september-24th-2011. Please help to support this vital organization in our community.

7:30 pm Peace Walk Begins – Led by clergy from many different faiths.

We will walk slowly and in silence together from the Wall of Hope to the Memorial Park in WaterPlace Park. This will be a lovely celebration of the UN International Day of Peace, which is celebrated all over the world. All of the wonderful people and communities of RI share this experience of peace. It will be a lovely and moving event against the backdrop of our amazing WaterFire.

Governor Lincoln Chafee has declared September to be the Month of Peace in RI, and Mayor Angel Taveras has declared it to be so in the City of Providence. This designation is a special one for our city and state. In a place founded by Roger Williams, with his ideas of tolerance and religious freedom, we walk together to honor these peaceful traditions. This celebration is part of the City of Providence 375 th Anniversary of its founding. Walking together in peace is a thoughtful way to honor our RI heritage and build a better world for ourselves and our children.

We are most happy to be part of the 375 th Anniversary Celebration of the City of Providence. The City is highlighting all the special cultural events from May to October 2011. The Celebration is organized around four themes and honors our founder Roger Williams.

A celebration to honor Roger Williams’ legacy and ideals
In 1636, Roger Williams and a small group of followers landed on the shores of the Seekonk River in Providence’s Fox Point.  From May - October 2011, Providence will commemorate the 375th anniversary of the colonial settlement along the Great Salt Cove.

That poem is so beautiful!!  I would love to do something with it at school... some kind of performance art piece or visual art piece to become part of our building. Gerri

Peace is not something you wish for;
it’s something you make,
something you do,
something you are,
and something you give away.
